Experience Classic Latin Operas at Amazonas Opera Festival!
If you daydream about vintage opera performances, the Amazonas Opera Festival will delight and satisfy! The only Latin American event of its kind, the festival draws tourists from far and wide to take in the splendor of meticulously rehearsed and dramatically performed opera.
The festival is generally held between the months of April and May. During this time tourists can behold four full length opera performances as well as various musical concerts. In addition to these scheduled attractions, each Amazonas Opera Festival has a few surprises in store. These surprises take the form of guest soloists and national talents from around Brazil. Past guests include such renowned ensembles as the Amazonas Chorus and Dance Corps, the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra, and last but not least, the Claudio Santoro Cultural Center Orchestra and Musical Groups.
All the excitement and wonder unfolds at the eclectic Instalaco Theater, a stage constructed in 2001 to house just such performances. The theater resides in Manaus, a cosmopolitan Brazilian city of over one million strong.
One of the most memorable Amazonas Opera Festival moments was when the festival invited Christoph Sclingensief to direct Rich Wagner's legendary “The Flying Dutchman” at several Manaus venues. Festival director Luiz Fernando Malheiro took charge of the music for this historic performance, drawing upon his experience producing Wagner's whole Ring trilogy at the Teatro Amazonas two years earlier. Together, Malheiro and Sclingensief opened the opera festival with a bang, ushering in a flood of musicians, samba schools, carnival floats, and even members of the auduence through the city and along the breathtaking Rio Negro river, all while the opera was being performed at outdoor open air venues. In so doing, the creative duo hoped to demonstrate the popularity of Wagner's music and reach as many viewers as possible in the process.
Besides directing, Mr. Schlingensief's work on “The Flying Dutchman” during the festival inspired the production of 18 short films, which would go on to be presented at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany. His festival performance acted as a springboard for his musical and opera career, leading to the exhibition of Schlingensief's work at a major art institution.
As you can see, the Amazonas Opera Festival is the chance to witness the birth of some of the best and most inspiring opera performances the southern hemisphere has to offer.
